Seven-card stud is a variant of stud poker, where each player has a hand of 7 cards from which they make the best possible 5 card hand. Until the recent increase in popularity of Texas hold ’em, seven-card stud was the most popular poker variant in home games across the United States, and in casinos in the eastern part of the country.
Three cards are initially dealt to each player, two face down and one face up, followed by a round of betting where the lowest up-card must bring in. The next 4 cards are dealt to each player one at a time, with a betting round after each, initiated by the player with the best hand showing. The 4th, 5th and 6th cards are dealt face-up, with the final ‘river’ card face-down.
