Charles Matthews took up Go as an undergraduate in Cambridge in 1974, became 1 dan in 1976 and 3 dan (his current grade) in 1978. Go took a back seat in the 1980s, when he was a lecturer in maths at Cambridge University and doing research in number theory.
Charles made his Go comeback in 1993, appeared in the British Championship match in 1997 (losing to Matthew Macfadyen), and has been chosen to represent the UK in this year's World Amateur Championship in Sendai, Japan.
He is married with two children. In the MSO spirit, he runs an after-school mind sports club for primary school children.
Charles has a regular column for the MSO Mindzine, teaching the game as well as reporting on news from European and amateur events. His systematic introduction to Go, Teach Yourself Go was published in 1999 by Hodder & Stoughton in the UK, NTC in the USA.
