THE FINAL
Aha! I thought, at last I can now record matches as fast as Harald Johanni, now that I’ve got the video camera. Not just a game here or there but the entire match, all of it from start to finish. So, it was with great anticipation that I sat down in front of the TV at home with the camera plugged in and started to watch the entire final of the Hilton 2000 between Raj Jansari and Jeff Barber.
With the score at 9-9 the tape stopped during the match and I asked both opponents to halt whilst I changed the tape and this they did and that I did. So, imagine my horror when I played back the second tape after the change over to find that the board was entirely different to the one we had just restarted with! I now realise that although on the TV screen the picture went blank (thus alerting me to a change of tapes) the actual recording had stopped some time earlier and that I had missed out on a whole raft of moves.
In mitigation I put it to you that this was the first time ever that a match has been recorded in this manner and in my ignorance I genuinely thought that when the screen went blank it coincided with the end of recording - Wrong! So, when we get to that point in Game 12 I have had to ‘invent’ moves to bring us back to the actual board position on the second tape. Sorry.
The entire final can be downloaded as a JellyFish .mat file from here. You can also obtain a free video of the match by sending a blank video tape to me at Biba HQ including a stamped addressed envelope for its return.
Here is the bit that I put in . . .
Game 12
| Jansari: 9 |
Barber: 9 |
| |
| 01) | 21: 13/11 24/23 | 65: 24/13 |
| 02) | 31: 8/5 6/5 | 62: 24/18 13/11 |
NB: It was at this point that the video camera stopped transmitting a signal which meant that the tape had ended. However, it was discovered that the video camera had stopped recording a few moves earlier and these moves were lost. I have ‘filled in’ the moves to arrive at the ‘re-start’ position. Jansari’s roll of 55 is correct but my moves start here . . .
| Jansari: 9 |
Barber: 9 |
| |
| 03) | 55: 13/3 13/3 | 55: 13/3 13/3 |
| 04) | 65: 24/18 23/18 | 52: 18/11 |
| 05) | 44: 13/9 13/9 8/4 8/4 | 63: 13/4 |
| 06) | 54: 6/1 6/2 | 54: 6/1 6/2 |
| 07) | 54: 6/1 6/2 | 33: 8/2 8/5 8/5 |
| 08) | 21: 9/7 9/8 | 43: 5/1 5/2 |
| 09) | 52: 11/6 7/5 | 52: 6/1 4/2 |
Barber’s roll 09) of 52 was the actual roll and ends my moves. The remainder is as happened.
