Camrose
- Victory for the Republic of Ireland
Unbelievably Wales, who could afford
to lose the last match by up to 40 IMPs, eventually lost it by 70,
giving the Republic a 25-3 win in the third match and an overall
score of 54 - 34 and the Camrose Trophy. Russell McClymont, past
President of the BBL who was on the spot in Dunadry where the match
was played said that there were a lot of very sad Welsh supporters
in Ireland tonight. He reported that two big hands made an enormous
difference, one of them yesterday when the Welsh played in 6NT which
went 4 off while the Republic played in 7 which cannot be beaten
if played correctly - and it was duly played correctly.
The other was on the very last board
of the whole match, when Wales failed to bid a slam - their options
were 6 or
6NT. The only lead to defeat 6
is Ace and another heart. The only lead to let 6NT through is ....
Ace and another heart. The Republic bid 6NT and Wales led .... Ace
and another heart.
This is an enormous disappointment
for the Welsh - the Republic are new entrants to the Home International
Series, this being the first time they have played since the 50's.
Normally the series would have finished after the fourth weekend,
with Wales the victors. But because the Republic now join in, they
met Wales in the fifth weekend and won. Our congratulations go,
of course, to the Republic, who have shown how much they deserve
to compete in this event, but we are all very sad for Wales. More
details as they become available.
