World Teams Olympiad
Maastricht, Netherlands
26 August - 9 September 2000

The 11th World Teams Olympiad comprising Open and Women's series, the 1st World University Teams Bridge Cup and the 1st Senior International Cup got under way in Maastricht on Sunday 27 August. The 2nd World Transnational Mixed Teams Championship will be held from the 5-9 September.

In the Open Series 72 countries are playing a round robin in 4 pools of 18 teams: in the Ladies Series 40 teams are drawn into 2 pools. The leading teams at the conclusion of the round-robins then qualify for the knock-out stages. In the Seniors and University events 24 and 22 countries are competing respectively.

In the Open series England have made a fine start and the team of Colin Simpson, Gunnar Hallberg, Glyn Liggins, Joe Fawcett, David Burn and Brian Callaghan (NPC John Williams, Coach David Bakhshi), lead their group after 5 rounds.

In the Womens Series our team of Nicola Smith, Heather Dhondy, Nevena Senior, Sandra Penfold, Michelle Brunner and Rhona Goldenfield (NPC Phil King, Coach Alan Mould) is lying 7th after 6 rounds.
