Having Nun, Partner?

Having Nun Cover

'Finesse Bridge Books' is a new company emanating from Gambit Chess Books, the biggest seller in the chess world. David Bird is the commissioning editor on the bridge side and their initial plan is to publish four books each year.

They will do well if they maintain the standard of their first offering Having Nun, Partner. David Bird's books and articles are always amusing and this is no exception. The characters at the convent have a range of abilities and personalities.

Maybe you recognise Sister Myrtle, an overweight nun unaware of her total lack of ability or Sister Benedict, her equally talent-free partner.

I like to think of myself as Sister Grace, a strong player with a kindly nature rather than her partner The Mother of Discipline, a grizzly old nun much feared by members of the noviciate for her punishment book - but I fear the latter is closer to me.

The book, about the matches played by the convent against a variety of opponents, contains some 100 hands in all. From the subtle lessons on how to treat partner to the excellent play points, you learn something from every story
