The English Bridge Union has appointed a media relations consultant to raise the profile of the EBU and the game of bridge in general.

David Harris, Chairman of the EBU said yesterday

"Bridge is a fantastic game, played by hundreds of thousands of people all over the country, but it receives less publicity than, say, football or golf. Now that bridge has been declared an Olympic sport we feel it is time to raise its profile.

By employing a media relations consultant, we are looking not only to increase public awareness of bridge and the English Bridge Union but to encourage new members to join us. As the national organisation for English bridge - and a non-profit-making organisation at that - we rely on a strong membership to help us finance our books and literature, the teaching of bridge to both children and adults and the running of competitions at all levels."

Julie Stretton, the new consultant, is a former national newspaper journalist with extensive media relations experience. Before starting her own media consultancy three years ago, Julie was Head of Communications at the Institute of Directors.
