over the weekend, with North America winning the Nations

Over 200 Bridge players took part in the inaugural Malta Congress
which began last week. The congress, a new event from the English
Bridge Union with sponsorship from Bridge Holidays Abroad, started
on Tuesday with a Pre-Congress Pairs event. Swiss Pairs and other

The e-bridge Team
have beaten Sweden in the final of the 2001 NEC Cup in Yokohama City,
Japan. The England-Senior Team came third, beating the Argentine/Austrian
Team in the play-offs, after being beaten by Sweden in the

The South African Ladies Team & The Egyptian Open Teams have
won the 1st African Zonal Championship. The South African Ladies
will now go on to represent Zone 8 in the Venice Cup in Bali, along
with the Egyptian Open Team who will be the Zone 8 representatives
in the Bermuda Bowl. Full

The 6th NEC Bridge Festival, hosted by The Japan Contract
Bridge League in Yokohama City, Japan is now underway, after 8 matches
the English team led by Brian Senior, is currently in 1st
place.

The third weekend of matches
in this year's Camrose series saw England travel to Belfast
to play Northern Ireland, and The Republic of
Ireland welcoming Scotland to the Belmont Hotel, Knock.
England now sit out the fourth weekend while Scotland
play N. Ireland and Wales play Republic of Ireland.

When the English Bridge Union
stated their intentions to raise money for the Save The Children
Charity in the autumn of 1999, the committee of Towcester Bridge
Club decided to hold an all day event in aid of the charity. The
day was a resounding success raising £1200.

Freddie Della-Porta, who was a Vice President of the English Bridge
Union, died recently, aged 95.
He served on the EBU Council
for many years and on the Board of Directors from 1976 to 1979.
Freddie received the Dimmie Flemming Award in 1986 and was made
Vice President in 1991.
23 January 2001
16 pairs from throughout the world were invited to the Netherlands
last weekend, to compete in The 15th Cap Gemini Ernst
& Young, World Top Invitation Tournament.
For the second year running, the event was won by Andrew Robson
and Zia Mahmood (with a score of 859 VPs) - an incredible achievement.

The Final stage of the English Open Trials was played on
12-14 January at the Young Chelsea Bridge Club, London. The 160-board
match was closely fought throughout, David Burn's team emerging as
winners.

European Championships being held in Tenerife from 16- 30

The second weekend of matches in this year's Camrose series
saw England at home to Scotland at the Dudley Hotel, Hove, and Wales
welcoming Northern Ireland to the Rest Hotel, Porthcawl. The Wales/Northern
Ireland match included a father and son partnership - Gary and Dafydd
Jones, Dafydd at 21 being the youngest ever Welsh Camrose player.
Youth was clearly a feature of the match, as the Northern Irish NPC,
Miss Ciara Burns, is believed to be the youngest ever NPC.
