Auction of the Pairs: On Thursday evening 10 May, we hold our lavish cocktail party at 18:30 at the Mirage Hotel. The Auction of the Pairs starts at 19:00. Each pair must make an initial bid of US $10,000 for the partnership and must own a minimum of 10% of itself. A pair has the right to purchase 40% of itself, or more, if the owner consents. Each pair will be auctioned individually.

Proper attire is required at all times and jackets and ties for this Auction.

Accommodation: The Mirage is offering room rates of $125 per night, plus tax, for single or double occupancy. If you are planning to stay at the host hotel, it is your responsibility to make the reservations by contacting the Mirage. The number is 800 499 6311 or you may Fax the hotel at 702 791 7495.

Please be sure to mention World Bridge Productions or The Cavendish Calcutta when faxing or when you reserve by phone, and do so promptly. The group rate expires on 9 April 2001.

After this date reservation will be subject to room availability. Please make an effort to stay at the Mirage, as it is in your interest as well as ours. If we fill our room block, there will be no charge for the playing space, and the prize pool will benefit accordingly.

Event Format: The field is expected to consist of 48 pairs playing a complete round-robin in three-board segments over five sessions. There may be some adjustments to the size of the field and the format.

Prize Awards: The expected distribution of the prize money from the Auction Pool and players is:

1st 28%
2nd 18%
3rd 12%
4th 9%
5th 8%
6th 7%
7th 6%
8th 5%
9th 4%
10th 3%

This event is licensed through Mirage by the Nevada Gaming Commission. World Bridge Productions, the manager of the event, will comply with all rules and regulations of the NGC, as well as all Nevada and U.S. withholding and reporting requirements.

Cavendish Teams for the Jack Dreyfus Cup

Conditions of Play: The same boards will be played simultaneously in each match throughout the event (two sessions on Wednesday, 9 May; final session on Thursday afternoon, 10 May). Since reduplicated boards must be ordered well in advance of the event, entries will be accepted on a first-come basis up to the capacity that can be accommodated.

Tournament Site: Mirage, 3400 Las Vegas Boulevard, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Entry Fees: US $2,500 per team, prepayment requested. The entry fee must be remitted prior to the start of play Wednesday afternoon.

Auction of the Teams: Brunch for players and interested bidders will be served at 11:30am on Wednesday, 9 May. Teams will be auctioned to the highest bidder at 12:30pm. Each team must make an initial bid of $5,000 for itself and has the right to purchase back 40% from the owner as well as the obligation to own 10%.

Play will commence at 1:30pm. Starting times for the evening session Wednesday and the Thursday afternoon session will be announced from the floor.

Prize Awards: The Tournament Committee reserves the right to adjust the formula for distribution of the prize money for the Auction and Team Pools, but the distribution is expected to be:

1st 33%
2nd 22%
3rd 16%
4th 12%
5th 10%
6th 7%

Payments: Auction Pool purchases must be settled as quickly as possible, but by no later than before play commences Thursday afternoon. Checks for the entry fee and pool purchases are to be made payable to World Bridge Productions.

A deluxe hotel/casino, superb playing space and the usual lavish hospitality are sure to make this year's competition for the Cavendish Pairs and Cavendish Teams for the Dreyfus Cup the strongest and most successful ever. We are excited about the prospects and hope you are, too.

4th World Bridge Productions (WBP) Pairs

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the 4th World Bridge Productions (WBP) Pairs, to be held in conjunction with the 27th Cavendish Invitational Calcutta, at The Mirage Hotel, in Las Vegas. The WBP Pairs will be contested over three sessions, two on Saturday 12 May, 2001 (12:30pm and 7:30pm) and one on Sunday 13 May, 2001 (at 12:30pm). The event will end by 6:00 p.m.

The playing space will be adjacent to that for the Cavendish Invitational. The auction for the WBP Pairs will be at The Mirage at a 10:30am brunch, to which the Cavendish participants will also be invited. We believe the bidding will be at least as vigorous as last year and that the auction pool will approach 100,000. In addition to receiving cash awards, the pairs placing first and second will be invited to play in the 2002 Cavendish Pairs.

All players in the WBP Pairs are invited to attend the Cavendish auction and cocktail party on the evening of 10 May and the closing party on 13 May. Also some openings will be available for those interested in playing in the
Cavendish Teams event beginning May 9.

Prize Awards: After deductions for expenses, the auction and players pools will be distributed as follows:

1st 30%
2nd 22%
3rd 12%
4th 10%
5th 8%
6th 7%
7th 6%
8th 5%

The actual awards will be posted during the first session. The number of places paid may be adjusted if warranted by the size of the field. The percentage deductions from the auction pool will be the same as those that taken from the Cavendish pools.

For the three years of its existence the WBP Pairs on its own has not generated enough Revenue to cover the expenses of running the event. In order to rectify this imbalance we are raising the entry fee from $400 per pair to $700. Additionally we expect to deduct 30% of the entry fee from the players pool.
