One of the anchor pairs for the Welsh women
in their home international team for the Lady Milne (a Round Robin
affair between the ladies of the four countries that make up the UK) has
been Maggie Pierce and Jill Casey. This was
a nice piece of card reading by Casey, not in the play but in the bidding
in their match against Ireland some years back. It looks a very ordinary
hand.

Pierce opened the West hand 1
and North overcalled 2 .
Casey said to me, holding J 10 3 of diamonds "I knew immediately
that Maggie had to play the hand." She was the only player to judge later
in the auction that 4
would be the best contract for no lead from North would damage. At all
the other tables the contract was the failing 4 !
