Junior chess prodigy secures US $20,000 Sponsorship deal .... Thanks to Kasparov.
Last weekend, the Mind Sports Olympiad revealed that it would grant
sponsorship for Britain's most promising chess junior. The sponsorship
deal, worth US $20,000 will be presented for the first time this year,
and will provide the young chess hopeful with comprehensive training by a top
professional and travel costs to tournaments.
The first recipient of this prestigious award is Murugan Thiruchelvam,
who at 10 years of age is the youngest person ever to win a game in the
British Chess Federation Championship.
World Champion in his category, Murugan was put forward for the award by
Chess legend Garry Kasparov. Mr Kasparov considered that Murugan's
talent was one to be nurtured, and suggested that he receive sponsorship to
afford him the best tutelage available.
Murugan Thiruchelvam will be competing at this
year's Mind Sports Olympiad, at the Olympia Conference Centre from
the 21st-29th August 1999.
